THE SANBY FAMILY IN SHEFFIELD 1861
In the years between 1851 and 1861 my great great great grandfather JOSEPH SANBY lost his wife HANNAH SANBY. The 1861 Census shows JOSEPH living as a widower with his three daughters and two sons at 119 Oxford Road in the Ecclesall Bierlow district of Sheffield. (PRO Ref RG9 3-7-Folio15 Page23)

The following year the eldest daughter ELIZABETH married a HENRY BURKINSHAW (PRO Ref Sheffield June quarter 1862Vol 9C Page 416). Her younger sister CAROLINE married a JOSEPH TYLER two years later (PRO Ref Sheffield June quarter 1864Vol 9C Page 416)
The next reference I have of CAROLINE is the 1881 Census. They were living at 93 School Street, Eastwood View Rotherham (PRO Reference RG11Piece/Folio 4673/11 Page 15). Judging from the birthplaces of the last three children it looks as though the family moved around South Yorkshire quite a lot in the late 1870's

The youngest daughter HANNAH married HENRY ROADHOUSE in the December quarter of 1865. (PRO Ref Sheffield December 1865 Vol 9C Page 427) At the time of 1881 Census they were living in the Crookes area of Sheffield. at 56 E S Crookes Nether Hallam Yorkshire (PRO Reference RG11Piece/Folio 4626/134 Page 22). At that time the couple had seven sons and one daughter living with them. And of course it means that the two eldest children were Henry's from a previous marriage or they were born out of wedlock.

There are two entries in the Burial Index for St Thomas's Church Crookes Sheffield 1859 - 1873 which MAY refer to two of Harriet's sons - Roadhouse Albert 10 Sept 1890 Crookes and Roadhouse William Henry 9 March 1895 40 Crookes
To date I am not clear as to what happened to GEORGE SANBY. There is a record of his birth in the Registers - Births Dec 1838 Sanby George Sheffield Volume 22 page 528. There is a record that GEORGE died "at sea" on 30th September 1864. This is from the Letters of Administration that were granted to his father Joseph Sanby of Morpeth Street Sheffield on 9th February 1865. His occupation is listed as Edge Tool Forger.
