Note: At the beginning on the nineteenth century Tipton in the West Midlands was still a collection of hamlets - Princes End, Ocker Hill, Toll End, Great Bridge, Burnt Tree and Tipton Green. The process of rapid industrialisation in the mid to late nineteenth century especially in coal and iron meant that these small hamlets merged together to form what is now Tipton
The IGI Index reports that there is an entry in the Parish Registers of St Thomas Church, Dudley, Worcester for the marriage on 14th June 1846 of JOSIAH SHUTT and VICTORIA JONES. The only additional information that can be added at the moment is that Josiah's father was called JOSEPH SHUTT and that Victoria was the daughter of WILLIAM JONES.
The actual entry in the register gives additional information

The 1871 Census shows that the family were still living in Tipton, Staffordshire

JOEL died at the age of 73 (Deaths September 1896 Stourbridge Volume 6c Page 95)
JOSIAH died at the age of 72 on 30th March 1898 in Sheffield (PRO Ref Sheffield Volume 9C Page383). Seven years earlier, the 1891 Census for Attercliffe - Darnall (Sheffield) shows Josiah Shutt as a Widower. His wife VICTORIA had died in the March quarter of 1886 (Sheffield Volume 9C Page336) age 57. He was living as a boarder at 59 Worthing Road, Sheffield and still working as a labourer.
In April 1912 I found that JOSIAH and VICTORIA were buried together in Sheffield's Darnall Cemetery

JOSEPH SHUTT and WILLIAM JONES are my wife's great great great grandfathers.
The same source who supplied me with information on JOEL SHUTT also supplied me with additional information on JOSIAH's parents - Joseph & Maria Shutt (nee Nock) were married on 14th October 1822 in Tipton Staffordshire, England. Sadly the marriage did not last eight years for their is an entry
"Staffordshire County Record Office - Wednesbury St. Bartholomew burial

Maria remarried
"Worcester County Record Office - Dudley St Thomas marriage registers

Booker (Vicar) In the presence of John Allen, Sarah Allen"

Notes
1. James Nutt was born in Whitchurch, Herefordshire.
2. Initially I had an entry for Maria been born in 1803 in Oldbury but a fellow researcher into the family notes the following
"While Maria (then Mrs Maria Nutt) is recorded as a rounded down age of 35 in the 1841 Tipton census in subsequent 1851/61/71 Tipton censuses she gives her age as 44/54/64. I did not find her in the 1881 census and on the freebmd site there is an entry for Dudley district in 1874 of the death of a Maria Nutt at the age of 69. Now Maria Nutt it seems was consistent about her age - in three out of four census records and this would give her year of birth as 1807 but the person who reported her death in 1874 thought she was 69 (ie born in 1805)".
3. The transcript of the register record
of her marriage to Joseph Shutt at Tipton St Martin:-
14 10 1822 Joseph Shutt (Bach) to Maria Nock (Spins), both of Tipton Parish
Joseph Shutt X mark, Maria Nock Signature, Curate
John Howells In the presence of Charles Jones X mark, James Brindley X mark.
The researcher makes two valid points
"The two points here in addition to what you already know are that Maria Nock
could sign her name and the names of those present is sometimes helpful when
you are trying to identify groups of workers/friends possibly from the same
area.
Old Swinford, as you probably know is the part of Stourbridge surrounding the
parish church of St Mary's, which has bmd records dating back to 1693. There is
a website - There
are Shutt records in Old Swinford, but they've always seemed to be a bit posher
than the kind of Shutt I'm looking for! But perhaps Maria's parents were better
off and she had sufficient schooling to teach her to sign her own name.
Though if you have found that Maria's parents were both baptised in Tipton, why
did they marry at Old Swinford? The original register for the marriage might
give you more information. The registers are deposited at WRO, County Hall,
Worcester but I believe microfilm copies can be found at Stourbridge Library and
? Dudley Archives.
One more thing, Kinver Edge, where a Joseph Shett was christened on 14th April
1799 (according to the IGI) is just west of Stourbridge. Could this be your
Joseph Shutt???"
