PRESENT DAY PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE HOUSES WHERE MY ANCESTORS LIVED
SOUTH ROAD, WALKLEY, SHEFFIELD
The shop in the centre of the photograph that has the sale notice outside and the window boarded up is 402 South Road Walkley Sheffield and it was where my great grandparents Edwin and Mary Sanby were living at the time of the 1891 Census. There is a photograph on the page showing South Road in 1903.
A few yards further up the road is 386 South Road where Edwin's father and my great great grandfather HENRY SANBY lived. It was in this house that he died December 1906 at the age of 77. Prior to living at South Road Henry lived at 1 Cobden Terrace, Crookes, Sheffield
The photographs were taken in May 2002
By way of comparison there is a photograph taken in 1972 which appears in J Edward Vickers book "Sheffield Old and New" (1973). As with many photos of the area that were taken at the time the one aspect that has changed is the amount of traffic on the roads and the signage on the streets.
The final photograph was taken in 1920 at the end of South Road. Walkley Library in on the right and the row of shops and houses on the left is where my ancestors lived at the turn of the century
