THE SANBY FAMILY IN SHEFFIELD 1881

The details listed below are taken from the 1881 Census. In the ten years since the previous census in 1871 the four eldest brothers have all married and left the house on Cobden View Terrace. The only brother remaining in the house is the youngest brother GEORGE SANBY (1864 - ). The two eldest daughters ANN ELIZA and MARY ANN SANBY have also left leaving the two youngest daughters AGNES and JANE at home. There is a ANN J who is a general servant at Thomas Morton's house at 147 Broomspring Lane. (see notes). This may be ANN ELIZA if the entry J is a transcription error.

Incidentally the house at Cobden View Terrace still exists. I have made a couple of enquiries and the row of houses were built circa 1850.

1. Joseph GILL -  IGI INDEX 456520- birth 10th April 1822 - christened 9th June 1822 Cathedral St Peter, Sheffield
Parents Joshua and Ellen GILL. There is a possibility that Mary's maiden name is POUNDS and that the marriage occurred in the December quarter of 1858 (GRO Ref vol 9c page 516). This needs verification though
2. Jane SANBY Maiden name GILL - her daughter JANE was born in the September quarter of 1877 (GRO Ref vol 9c page 440)

JOSEPH and JANE SANBY were married in the registration district of Ecclesall Bierlow in the June quarter of 1876 (GRO Ref vol 9c page 315). Incidentally Jenkinson Street no longer exists as it was demolished years ago as part of the Kelvin development. It ran parallel to Fox Street. Joseph and Jane must have been lodging at the home of Jane's parents

Note Hannah SANBY appears in the 1901 Census age 69 still living in Sheffield and still employed as a Warehouse Woman. I am sure that HANNAH SANBY is the second, and much younger wife, of my great great great grandfather JOSEPH SANBY (1806-1876). Prior to marrying JOSEPH, she was known as HANNAH MEDLEY. She died aged 74 in the March quarter of 1908 (GRO Ref Sheffield Vol 9C Page 382).

George Henry SANBY (GRO ref vol9c page 418)  was born in the March quarter of 1898 in the Ecclesall Brierlow district of Sheffield. Sadly there a record of his death in the June quarter of the same year. He would have only been months old.

HENRY and AGNES SANBY are buried in St Mary's Cemetery at Walkley in Sheffield

Burial record for Agnes SANBY and others in grave C240:

C240

SANBY Agnes 19 Oct 1884 181 Hoole St 54 Thomas Smith

SANBY Henry 26 Dec 1906 378 South Rd. 77 Sydney T.G. Smith

BRADLEY Elizabeth Hannah 22 Dec 1936 Nether Edge Hospital 83 Sydney J. Grenville

There is a marker of some sort but it only has initials. Confusingly, my list says they are ‘SH’. I am wondering if that is a mistake for ‘HS’
