NORMAN HAROLD HOBBS (1893 - 1979)

Norman Harold - died at the age of 85 on Friday 16th March 1979 in Treforest, Pontypridd, Mid Glamorgan after being ill for sometime. The funeral was five days later on the 21st. His home address being 11 Belleview. He married Elsie who only recently died in February 1996

The photograph shows Norman in the Navy. The date on the back of the photograph is dated by Norman as 8th February 1915 and so he would have been 21 at the time it was taken

The photograph on the right shows Norman on the left holding a cat. The inscription on the back of the photograph states that it was taken on Norman's 52nd birthday on 10th June 1945. The address at the time is given as 9 Avon Street, Wai-whe-tee, Lower Hull, Near Wellington, New Zealand.

As far as I can ascertain Norman spent many years in the Merchant navy but unfortunately I know next to nothing about his service. The only concrete evidence I cam across was a letter my dad kept that was adressed to the family when they were living at Hilltop Thurgoland. It was from Norman dated 1946 and stated that he was on board the SS Harmattan. In the book "British Tramps" by I.G.Stewart the author gives the following information

HARMATTAN 4,558 gross tons, length 408ft x beam 54.6ft, built 1930 by R. Thompson &Sons, Sunderland for J & C. Harrison & Co, London who operated a fleet of general tramp steamers. 12.12.42 damaged by limpet mine attached to hull by frogman from Italian submarine AMBRA while lying in the Bay of Algiers. 1952 sold to Reederi Willy H. Schlieker (managed by Rob. M. Sloman), Hamburg and renamed MARGA. 1960 sold to Cia.de Nav. Puerto Nueva S.A., Panamanian flag, managed by Purvis Shipping Co, London. 2.11.71 arrived at Split, Yugoslavia for scrapping.

The above two photographs are the only ones I have of Norman and Elsie together and in each case I do not know neither the date nor the location. From the information I have Norman and Elsie did not have any children by their marriage. However Norman did have a son from an earlier relationship, Leonard Hobbs who was my first cousin once removed.
