LEONARD ELKANAH HOBBS (1926 - 1987)

Lenny (pictured in the centre of the above photograph) was born in Pigotts Village, St John's, Antigua, West Indies on 14 April 1926. His father was Norman Hobbs and his mother a Ruby Whyte (date of birth 24th June 1908) who lived in the village. Lenny, who suffered with ill-health throughout his life, came to the United Kingdom in September 1947 (see note 1) and after stopping briefly in London came to live with his Aunt Rose and Uncle Clem in Thurgoland. The photograph of Lenny that is shown below is taken from his passport

He worked in Stocksbridge for many years latterly with a company called Hepworth Refractories. Unfortunately, ill health forced him to retire early and he spent the last years of his life in Thurgoland.

After chronic kidney failure and an heart attack, Lenny passed away in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, Sheffield on 19th September 1987, less than 18 months after the death of his Aunt Rose. They are buried next to one another in the churchyard at Holy Trinity Churchyard, Thurgoland, Sheffield.

Lenny also had a half brother called Delan Lake  who was born  nearly nine years after Lenny on 31st March 1935 but he was known to everyone as "Wally". He had a tragic death on Wednesday 5th December 1973 as this report of the inquest in a local paper states

DIED ON THE WAY TO GET RATION BOOK

"A jury returned a verdict of accidental death at the inquest of a Leeds motor mechanic who was struck by a van as he stood by his parked car.

Mr Declan Lake (38) of 14 Martin Court, Whitekirk, (Leeds 15) had gone to collect his petrol ration coupons at a Post Office in Selby Road near the junction with Austhorpe Avenue when the accident occurred. He had a fractured skull and died before reaching hospital.

In an alleged statement the driver of the van Mr Eric Alfred Saporiti (28) of Southfield Street Nelson Lancashire claimed that Mr lake took one step back onto the road as he was driving past."

He was put to rest at Whitekirk Church on 14th December 1973

NB The newspaper report calls him Declan not Delan Lake
