FREDERICK SANBY (1856 - 1931) and ELIZABETH SANBY nee WILDGOOSE (1859 - 1929)

From the information I obtained from the 1871 Census in November 2003 I confirmed that FREDERICK SANBY was my great grandfather EDWIN's twin brother. The 1881 Census reveals the following information with regard to Frederick and his family.

Dwelling: 130 Eyre Lane Census Place: Sheffield, York, England
Source: FHL Film 1342124 PRO Ref RG11 Piece 4651 Folio 45 Page 27

Elizabeth SANBY Married 21 Female Sheffield, York, England Rel: Wife
Eliza Ann SANBY U 2 Female Sheffield, York, England Rel: Daughter
Elizabeth SANBY U 5 months Female Sheffield, York, England Rel: Daughter

This is consistent with the information that I have been able to obtain elsewhere. A FREDERICK SANBY was married in the June quarter of 1878 in the Ecclesall Bierlow (Ref 9c Page 313) area of Sheffield. His wife's maiden name was  ELIZABETH WILDGOOSE. There is a record of a Elizabeth Wildgoose being born in the June quarter of 1859 (Sheffield Vol 9C Page283). this would tie in with the information I have but before I can make any firm conclusions, further research is needed.

The 1891 Census reveals that the family were living at 109 Walkley Crescent, Walkley Sheffield  - (Ref RG 12/3796 Page 19)

The 1901 Census reveals that the family had moved but still remained in the district. They were living at 36 Compton Street Walkley Sheffield  - (Ref RG 13/4343 Page 21). The eldest daughter had left home but there is an entry in the 1901 Index for an ELIZA SANBY aged 22 who was employed as a Warehouse Woman.

Living with Frederick and Elizabeth were their sons Walter (24 - Edge Tool Grinder) Herbert (18 - Edge Tool Striker) and their daughters Agnes (21 - Pocket Knife Cutler) and Edith (15)

WALTER SANBY was born in July 1886. His school record states

Sanby, Walter (Student, dob 12 July 1886).
Parent or guardian name(s): Frederick Sanby (~), of 55 Orchard Rd.
Admitted to Bole Hill School, Bole Hill Rd, Walkley, Sheffield, as of 04 May 1896, until 11 July 1899, reason for leaving: F 144. Previously attended St Joseph's RC.
For further details of Walter's life please see the foot of the page. As an aside, the attendance at St Joseph's RC school is puzzling - with a couple of exceptions the Sanby family were very much Church of England

HERBERT SANBY  was born in June 1892 (GRO ref Ecclesall Bierlow Volume 9C Page 362 Sept 1892). His school record states

Sanby, Herbert (Student, dob 8 Jun 1892).
Parent or guardian name(s): Fred Sanby (~), of 36 Compton Street.
Admitted to Bole Hill School, Bole Hill Rd, Walkley, Sheffield, as of 03 Jul 1900, until 19 May 1905, reason for leaving: F144 R.O.B.. Previously attended Bole Hill Infant School.

He subsequently married a ANNIE WAINWRIGHT (Marriages June 1914 quarter Sanby Herbert Wortley Volume 9c Page 609). They had two children

HERBERT. (Births Sanby Herbert Mar 1916 quarter Ecclesall Bierlow Volume 9c page 713).

IRENE (Births December 1919 quarter Sanby Irene Ecclesall Bierlow. Volume 9c Page 834)

On 19th August 1942 a report appeared in the Manchester Guardian. Unfortunately at the moment I do not know if the HERBERT SANBY mentioned is the father or the son

AGNES SANBY was born on 24th May 1889. In September 2008 I obtained brief details of Agnes's school record -

Sanby, Agnes (Student, dob 24 May 1889).
Parent or guardian name(s): Frederick Sanby (~), of 55 Orchard Rd.
Admitted to Bole Hill School, Bole Hill Rd, Walkley, Sheffield, as of 14 Dec 1896, until 16 Jan 1903, reason for leaving: F 144. Previously attended The Bole Hills Infant School.

Agnes married a WILLIAM HENRY WILDBORE (Marriages September 1913 Wildbore William H Sanby Ecclesall Bierlow. Volume 9c page 87a). They had two daughters WINIFRED (b1915) and JOAN(b1922). In May  2008, whilst I was on a conducted tour in Walkley Cemetery, Sheffield I came across their grave purely by chance. From the inscription it seems as though AGNES died first on 12th November 1968 aged 79  and then five weeks later her husband died on 18th December aged 80. They had been married for 55 years - I hope their lives were happy ones.

William and Agnes's grave - Walkley Cemetery, Sheffield May 2008

1902 saw the death of their second eldest daughter ELIZABETH. There is an entry in the Burial Register for St Mary's Church in Walkley, Sheffield that states that ELIZABETH SANBY was buried in St Mary's Cemetery Walkley Sheffield on 10th March 1902 aged 21. Her address was given as 36 Compton Street, Walkley, Sheffield . There is also an entry for ELIZABETH's death in the March quarter of 1902 - GRO reference is Ecclesall Bierlow Volume 9C Page 230.

Elizabeth's was the first burial in the grave. The next is the grandson of Frederick and Elizabeth. WILLIAM FREDERICK ALBERT GODWIN who died on June 25th 1902, three months after Elizabeth. WILLIAM was just four months and three weeks old. WILLIAM was the baby son of Elizabeth's eldest sister ELIZA ANN who as we have noted left the household prior to the 1901 Census. There is a record of a ELIZA ANN SANBY marrying a ARTHUR WILLIAM GODWIN in the September quarter of 1901 (Ecclesall Bierlow GRO reference Volume 9C Page 696)

WILLIAM GODWIN's birth is also recorded in the Index's  as William Frederick A GODWIN - Ecclesall Bierlow - March quarter of 1902 - GRO reference is Vol 9C Page 421. and so sadly is his death Ecclesall Bierlow - September quarter of 1902 - GRO reference is Volume 9C Page 222.

Incidentally the only reference I can find to date of a ARTHUR GODWIN in Sheffield is in the 1901 Census. He is recorded as a 19 year old "Bombardier S Artillery" who was born in Kingston, Surrey.

In December 2011 I received the following information regarding Arthur and Eliza Ann

"With regard to Eliza Ann Sanby b 1878 I have her on my tree married to Wm Arthur Godwin at Ecclesall Bierlow 1Q 1901. Wm Arthur (who sometimes appears in the records as Arthur Wm) was born in Kingston on Thames on 13-11-1882 the son of Albert Edward Godwin (a printer/compositor at Kelly's Directory Printing Works) and Julia Mary Alliston who were my Great Grandparents.

I don't know how to get in touch with Wm Arthur's branch of the family. I have found out that he was in the Royal Field Artillery which would have been stationed at Hillsborough Barracks in 1901. He entered the 1st World War as a Bombardier or Sgt (I forget which) but had risen to 1st Lieut by the end of the war. His death cert shows that he died at Shoeburyness on 10-05-1928 at the early age of 50. The RA Gunnery School was at Shoeburyness, and his occupation was shown as Bar Steward, so presumably the RA found this job for him when he retired from the army. The informant was AD Godwin, but I don't know who he is. Eliza Ann appears to have died at Southend (probably Shoeburyness) in 1958.

Their children were Wm Fredk Arthur b and d 1902 as you mention. Also: Horace Walter b 1906 Ecclesall Bierlow m Jessie Peach 1948 d 1968 can't find any children Arthur H b 1908 Naas Co Kildare no more info (there was a barracks there as well) Winifred A b 1918 m John E H Arnott 1940 d 1993 at least 1 child."

A further contact added some more information to the family

" William Arthur (aka Arthur Wm): commissioned 1916, 1st Lt 1918, discharged 1920.Address at time of death: 35 Waterloo Rd. Shoeburyness Informant: A D Godwin, son (mis-transcription for A H Godwin?)

Horace Walter: Marriage 3 July 1948, Bachelor, age 42, F/O Retd Address 15 Crofton Ave Wadsley Died 1968, Yorks West Riding

Jessie Peach: b 3Q 1914 At marriage: spinster age 33 Clerk. Father: James Fredk Peach Mother's maiden name: Watkinson Died 1996, Derbyshire/Yorkshire

Arthur H: Possible Marriage to Lilian G Eighteen (Essex SW) 4a 994 Sep 36??  Witness at Horace's marriage in '48

Winifred A: b 6 Aug 1918, Rochford, Essex m 2Q 1940 Southend to John E H Arnott died Rugby 1993 one daughter: Ann M E Arnott b 1946 Southend - Maybe other children? John E H Arnott: b 20 April 1911, died Rugby March 1988 - Ann M E Arnott: m 1Q 1967, Coventry to Robert G Williams

So the only offspring who is likely to be alive that I know about from this branch of the family is Ann Williams (nee Arnott); and Williams, I think being the fourth most common name in the UK, is extremely difficult to trace."

The third burial in the grave was that of Frederick and Elizabeth's fourth child and second son WALTER SANBY. The gravestone records that WALTER died on April 19th 1915 at the age of 28. It also notes that WALTER "was the beloved husband of FLORENCE SANBY". I believe that the couple got married in the March quarter of 1912. There is a record of a FLORENCE S WELLS marrying a WALTER SANBY (Ecclesall Bierlow GRO reference Vol 9C Page 424). The couple could have only been married just three years before Walter died.

The tragedy of Walter's death is exacerbated by the fact that the couple had a young son

Herbert SANBY Births June 1912 quarter Ecclesall Bierlow. Volume 9c Page 796. It looks as though HERBERT was named after Walter's younger brother. This tragedy is confirmed by Herbert's school record

Sanby, Herbert (Student, dob 13 May 1912).
Parent or guardian name(s): Elizth Sanby (Gdmthr) (~), of 8 Parsonage Crescent.
Admitted to Bolehill Junior & Infants Council School, Bole Hill Rd, Walkley, Sheffield, as of 14 May 1917, until 30 Sep 1921, reason for leaving: Senior. Previously attended Abbeydale.

Sanby, Herbert (Student, dob 13 May 1912).
Parent or guardian name(s): Florence (~), of 8 Parsonage Crescent.
Admitted to Bole Hill School, Bole Hill Rd, Walkley, Sheffield, as of 03 Oct 1921, until 22 Jul 1926, reason for leaving: Over age. Previously attended Junior Dept.

It looks as though Herbert was initially looked after by his grandmother Elizabeth and then his mother Florence. There is an intriguing entry in the registers that may throw some light on the family at that time

Births Sep 1921 Sanby Margaret Wells Ecclesall Bierlow. Volume 9c Page 869

Margaret is christened a SANBY but her mother at least on the certificate has reverted to her maiden name, WELLS. She may have well married another Sanby but I can find no record of such a marriage. The other possibility is that Margaret may have been born out of wedlock but this is merely supposition.

The last two burials in the grave were those of ELIZABETH and FREDERICK respectively. ELIZABETH died on March 13th 1929 at the age of 70. (Deaths Mar 1929 Sanby Elizabeth 70 Ecclesall Bierlow. Vol 9c Page638)

According to the inscription ELIZABETH SANBY "was worthy of everlasting remembrance". Her husband FREDERICK died just over two years later on 22nd May 1931 at the age of 75
