Constance and Ernest Milner - Sheffield

CONSTANCE or Connie was my grandad's older sister by three years. Two photographs exist that were taken when they were just young children. The first one is dated 1903 which would have made Connie 5 years of age and Sid just 2 years old. The second one was taken 4 years later at the wedding of their eldest brother FRED

CONSTANCE ("Connie") married an ERNEST MILNER in 1921 (Marriages Sep 1921 Hemsworth Constance Ernest Milner Ecclesall B. 9c 794) There is a photo of the couple at a "high tea" in the early 1920's, location not known.

Connie and Ernest are to the left of the photo whilst my grandparents Sid and Lil are to the right. I believe that the man at the head of the table holding the baby may be called JIM WHITAKER

Connie and Ernest had two children MARY born 1922 and PETER born 1930. There is a marvellous photo of Connie and Mary that must have been taken circa 1925. Again the location is not known

The photograph below was taken in Bridlington in 1935. The person on the left is ERNEST, to his left are his sister in law LILY (my grandmother), his wife CONNIE and his mother in law MARY ANN.

My mother is 7 years old and is at the front to the left, next to her dad Sid. Behind mum is Sid's older sister Connie holding her son Peter. The lady at the back in the centre is their mother and my great grandmother Mary Anne Hemsworth who had just turned 80!. On the right of the photo is my grandmother Lily who has an arm around her son Jack. The final person on the photo to the right of the photo is Connie's daughter Mary.

This photo was taken at Ashopton in the Derwent Valley, a village that was to be submerged just a couple of years later to create one of England's largest reservoirs.

The MILNER family lived at 2 Southey Hall Drive,  Sheffield. It was at this address that ERNEST died on Sunday 21st February 1954. He was cremated three days later at Sheffield's City Road Crematorium. CONNIE lived to be just a few weeks short of her 100th birthday (1898 - 1998).

She is the longest living of all the family I have come across to date.

Connie spent most of her life in Sheffield but her last years were spent with her daughter MARY in Exeter, Devon where she died in 1998
